TJ's Gym Weekly News 4/5/2020

February 27th, 2013 was the day that NBA basketball changed forever, and diminutive Steph Curry was the one who did it. In a great article about his book Hot Hand, Ben Cohen uses a night in New York to illustrate that streaks don't necessarily come out of nowhere.
When Steph Curry was a sophomore in high school, it was obvious that he possessed extreme talent. His dad, former NBA player Dell Curry, knew that, in order for his son to take his game to the college level, he would have to change his shot. Steph's shot was leaving his hand too low, and taller players would easily block it. That summer when most high-level high school players were barnstorming the country on all-star summer league teams, Dell kept his son at home, completely changing his shot to a higher release point and therefore a higher trajectory. Dell says Steph must have missed 10,000 shots that summer.
Our goal is to provide you with value. Your overarching wellness is our business. When you wake up in the morning, it's your job to go through a checklist with regards to your fitness. Sleep, stress, nutrition, hydration, and mindset all play into the decisions you make as to how you are going to plan for, and execute, your workout. Here is the ranking I've made, with priorities dependent on your checklist from poor to excellent:
Movement
Health
Exercise
Fitness
GAINZ!
If you're currently a bit of a train wreck, your job will be choosing to simply move that day—walking, biking, hiking at a very low level. Health is a level where you are stepping up your intensity, so that maybe you’re breaking a sweat. Exercise might include multiple modalities like stretching AND aerobic activity. Fitness is where you are really upping the intensity where the 3 Horseman show up. Finally, GAINZ! (sort of a joke term) pertains to being on a very strict, progression-based program individualized for you, where you are showing up every day, and you've got your checklist dialed in.
Right now, you are adjusting your life on the daily. We all are. The thing is that adjustments are always necessary for success.
Steph Curry always took the same seat on the the same bus to road games from the hotel. He was, and is, a creature of habit. Always the same meal, always the same warmup, always at the same time. But in the story in the article linked above, one night the team had gotten in late from Indiana where there had been a fight on the court with the Pacers. Warriors players had been fined and suspended. The next night, Steph missed his bus and had to take a later one, which was then pulled over by the police for making an illegal turn. Steph's routine was destroyed. He raced into Madison Square Garden late, with no chance of going through his normal routines and rituals.
He proceeded to go out and score 54 points by shooting from everywhere and anywhere. If you watch the highlights on youtube, you will be stunned, even if you've seen every game he's ever played.
Sometimes the adjustments we make are permanent and massively uncomfortable, and sometimes they are made in a moment’s notice for something fairly inconsequential. Either way, taking the time to think about your adaptation, so you can continue moving forward, is the point. I’m happy to talk live if you need help imagining.
