"Aunties Need to Handle, Too."

We had a wonderful week in Hawaii last week. It was our first real family vacation in six years! My days all started the same way: up at 5am and down to the gym. By 6:30, I was on my walk as the sun rose, and then I would settle in with my book (Educated by Tara Westover—totally recommend it) and read until everyone came down from the room to start the day. As I sat by the hotel pool in those early hours, I had the opportunity to chat with the staff as they set up the towels, chairs, and umbrellas for the day.

The first thing I noticed was that almost all of these folks looked fit and jacked—wide shoulders, thin waists, built butts and legs. They moved efficiently and smoothly, negotiating everything from towel carts to huge umbrella stanchions to multiple beach chairs at a time.

I asked one of the men what he did for workouts. He said that the normal Hawaiian routine was to do a ton of surfing, swimming, and rowing. I couldn't help but say, "You guys don't look like the typical surfers I see back home!” He laughed, saying that yes, he does lift a weights almost every day, as well. He said that his generation was taught by the "Uncles,” a term of reverence for older men on the islands, that if they wanted to do all the fun stuff, they’d better be strong, or else they'll lose that ability as they age.

The next day, there was a young woman setting up the beach chairs. Like the others, she looked super fit.  I asked her the same questions I’d asked the day before, and she said that in their free time not only do Hawaiians do a lot of water sports, but they spend a lot of time helping their parents, grandparents, and neighbors with their properties, building trails, clearing invasive brush, etc.  She said she goes to the gym regularly, as well.

I said I never see native Hawaiians running or jogging. She laughed and said, "Nah, what's the point? It doesn't do anything." I laughed and then told her about the conversation I’d had with the young man the day before. She nodded and said that the other point of getting strong and fit is that the culture requires men the men be protective of women, to be able to raise a family and have the ability to balance work and recreation.  Inactivity is seen as unattractive and lazy.

"Uncles need to handle" she said. I loved that quote. They need to have the strength of the mind, body, soul, and appearance to be valued in their culture.

I said "True, but look at you! You're hauling these chairs around, digging sandbags for the umbrellas, and jamming them into the ground like it's no big deal. I don't see much difference between you and the guys."

She smiled, looked out at the ocean, and said "Ya, Aunties need to handle, too."
