TJ's Gym Weekly News 2/14/2020
Message from TJ
After sitting down with all the folks beginning our Big Lean program and listening to their individual goals, I typically dig in to how they ended up in their current state with which they are unhappy.
There is an amazing coincidence of how "this happened." Typically it wasn't one big thing but a large number of small mishaps that slowly led to the present day.
This reminded me of the op-ed article in the Wall Street Journal I read last week, written by Doug Hodge. Hodge is the world's largest bond manager and was also sentenced last week to nine months in prison for hiring Rick Singer to get his kids into college through Singer's bribery scheme.
Now, if you know me at all, you know I love me some Varsity Blues convictions. The psychology of ILLEGALLY risking everything in order to achieve some sort of leg up has always fascinaTED me.
In his piece, Hodge explains that his was a series of small steps that he rationalized as OK, and not one huge decision. Sound familiar?
In this video, Malcolm Gladwell talks about Relative Deprivation Theory, which explains how we compare ourselves to our immediate circle and not to the larger holistic majority.
I'm using these two examples to shed light on the decisions we make. The small daily, negative things we do that slowly erode our decision-making, and the self-talk we use to tell ourselves it's OK because.......well, just because.
Finding clarity around the obvious isn't always easy, but it's always the right thing to do. Hopefully you'll reach out if you need some help.
I’ll be here when you do.
