Message from TJ
Justin was chagrined when he told me about the last time he tried to play pick-up basketball. He had a great time and, like it had been for me for many years, it was his escape from life. No family, no work, just something he loved to do and happened to be really good at.
The next day after flying for work, his knee ballooned, and he had to hobble around for a few days until the swelling subsided.
"So what do I do? Just stop playing?" he asked.
Ugh, this was my exact scenario six years ago. I used to play every Sunday afternoon and would then spend three to four days with knees like balloons. I hate to say this but, I had to quit.
The good news is that I am fitter than I've ever been in my life. I substituted something better, even though I didn't love it as much. And it’s lead to other great things.
Carroll Shelby won the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1958. This is a grueling auto race testing the endurance of driver, car, and crew. He was the first American to ever do so. Shelby was forced to retire from racing because of a genetic heart condition. He actually chewed down nitroglycerin pills during the race, just to keep himself from having a heart attack on the course.
Shelby became on of the most influential car engineers of the last century, all while envying his drivers and with his failing ticker.
He received a heart transplant in 1993 and a kidney transplant in 1996, because his kidneys were failing due to all the medications he took the previous 30 years. He went on to live to be 89, even though his physicians told him he'd never make it to 60. He was also married 7 times.
Not bad.
Shelby made choices. Some were hard, but the reality is that the decisions he made with the help of experts added decades to his life.
The TJ’s Gym BIG LEAN PROGRAM starts on February 1st, and I want to help you. The BL gives us the opportunity to work together, stay motivated, and dig into the how's and why's. I’m right here to answer any questions about the program and give you the honest truth when it comes to shedding excess body fat. You’ll need to work on mind, body, and soul.
Justin knows the answer to his question. It's uncomfortable but inevitable. He also told me he's going to learn how to do Double Unders this year, and that's awesome. I can’t wait to see what else happens for him!

A year ago, 7.5 years into her 8.5 years as a TJ's Gym member, Jean walked into my office asking for a plan to lose weight. Last week, she reminded me of what I told her during a goal-setting session (It had nothing to do with nutrition) and she said she’s the happiest she’s been in years.
