Message from TJ:
Summertime Nostalgia
Growing up, I spent just about every summer at the Jersey Shore. My grandparents would rent a place on Long Beach Island, a block or two from the sand. We would spend close to a month body surfing and doing beach stuff with my cousins, aunts, and uncles. We would cram 20 people into those double decker apartments. We would drag the hungover adults to the beach at 9am, head home for lunch and a nap midday, and then go back again till 5. The evenings were spent flying kites or riding four-wheel, surrey bikes with the canopies around town or going to the boardwalk. Our Irish sunburned skin actually looked OK against the bright lights of the carny rides. At the the theater across the parking lot one summer, I launched my extra large Coke two rows back while watching Jaws, and the next summer I fell in love with Olivia Newton John after seeing Grease.
This time of year brings around the feeling of nostalgia in just about everyone. We see it in our kids’ eyes. The excitement, the possibility, and the emotion that comes from the end of the school year. It’s the feeling of summer freedom mixed with butterflies thinking about what's to come next Fall.
For us adults, the longer days give us more time outside to sit and think about our own summers. The sounds of the ice cream truck, or the splashing of water, or the sounds of the heat bugs can bring back memories we haven’t visited since last year.
Summertime drives us to connect with our younger selves. We travel "home." We make attempts to connect with friends from the past, when in other times of the year we wouldn't think of it. We do things to create fond memories for our futures in our own way, with the hopes that these adventures will create the same feelings for our children that they did for us.
Trips to the beach or national monuments or college campuses skyrocket during the summer, not only because of the end of the school year but because we're motivated to try something new. Nostalgia is often the catalyst to get up and go.
Memories will do that. They force us to face the present and the future. Planning is the toughest part. Once you start doing, momentum and motivation kick in. I want nothing more than to help people get the most out of their memories by being as proactive as possible in creating positive, vibrant, lively memories for their own families and for themselves for years to come.
Getting focused, setting a goal, and making it happen is what summertime is all about. We want to help you do the same thing all year long. Feel free to reach out any time.
All my best for an inspired summer,
~TJ
