Message from TJ:
If you've got kids THIS is the best time of the year to change.
Allow me to explain myself.
If you have kids, your life is ruled by the school calendar, which basically starts in late August. You've just come off of a fantastic/horrible Summer break celebrating and traveling, and you are now "recovering" into a daze. Your fitness and lifestyle were prrrrrrrettttttty good, but you certainly weren't on top of your game. Dessert after every meal? Sure! Standing in chest deep water for an hour and calling it an "active" day? Absolutely!
School starts, and it's the Daytona 500 every day. No time is busier than the Fall for after-school activities and social outings. The weather is fantastic. The kids are bummed to be back in school, but they're usually too exhausted to complain much. You hit an overnight soccer tourney in Modesto, and because the kids are sequestered by the hotel pool with their teammates, 2 or 8 glasses of wine at the hotel bar seem like a fine idea. Before you know it, it's mid-October and you've told yourself that two 20-minute jogs per week for the last month are OK, because "it's just so nice outside." The nutrition plan has been 50/50, and because the holidays are right around the corner, you tell yourself that starting a nutrition plan now would be a fool's game.
Then the holidays actually show up and we all know how that plays out.
You stumble into January grasping at anything and everything and pull yourself to safety like Quint in "Jaws" as he slides into the shark's mouth kicking and screaming. It doesn't work out well for him, nor does it for you.
Ski week arrives, and you are stumbling around the ring in a perpetual eight count. You take a Mike Tyson uppercut right on the kisser. The haze finally clears at some point in late February. You look at yourself in the mirror and the image of one of those Biology class fetal pigs comes to mind. In the voice of Billy Bob in Sling Blade, you mutter "Something's gotta change."
And here we stand. The perfect place and time. March, April, and May. Ninety days of getting right. Sure, you've got a Spring Break thrown in there, but it ain't for six weeks. You can have an entirely new attitude by then and can be a positive habit-forming machine. The first week will be tough, but with a little bit of a plan and some accountability, you'll move mountains by the time the clocks change. The days are getting longer, and the after-school schedule is now automatic. The social calendar is minimal in March (I know, St. Pat's and March Madness, but it's all relative) and April, so you've got a fighting chance.
Ninety days till Summer, and you're sitting in the pole position. Just step on the gas.
I'm sitting here waiting for you. Let's set some goals.
