Measuring Stick

About two blocks away from our Corte Madera gym is where the town of Corte Madera decided to rebuild its physical town offices housing Town Hall, the building department, and the town administrative offices.

I walked over the other day and watched the demolition like a wide-eyed five-year-old kid.

Big trucks, loud noises, and an impressive amount of progress in just a few hours.

By the next day it was gone.

Now the work begins.

Over the next year, they will dig a new foundation, level and pour a new concrete floor, and then frame the new structure.

This will happen very quickly, and everyone will watch the new building take form.

Then, it will appear as though a whole lot of nothing is happening.

Plumbing, electrical, interior walls, stairwells, etc. will be built. Nobody will see that from the outside.

This is the grind.

Next comes sheetrock and exterior siding. Then flooring and paint.

Finally, landscaping and exterior painting.

This is when things will starting to get exciting. The project will have probably been going on months and months longer than they thought, and it’ll be lots of money over budget. There will also likely be at least a few new staff members who weren’t there when the project started.

I have some very well-defined goals for our gym business and community for the upcoming year.

Upgrading and organizing the Corte Madera gym and making sure people are feeling welcomed in their new home.

Closing the Mill Valley gym.

Bringing on new staff members through a comprehensive internship and mentoring program.

Plus, a bunch of other professional and personal markers I plan to achieve, keeping things simple and keeping my eye on the ball.

They will take a long time to accomplish and will surely bring with them a slew of unforeseen obstacles.

I’ve decided to use the building of the new Town Hall as my measuring stick.

My goal is to beat it.

To make it it to my clearly defined, empirical finish line before they do.

It’s also a reminder to me that it won’t be easy, plans will get ruined, changes will have to be made, it will be over budget, and it might take longer than anticipated.

But when it’s done, it will be pretty sweet.

Here’s to you finding your measuring stick!

We’re here to help.
